Who Should Attend
A unique hands-on training program designed to build competence and confidence in personnel involved in monitoring ambient air quality, working with:

Consultants who conduct Impact analysis or Related work

Industries who measure Air quality parameters

Pollution Control Officers and other Audit Professionals

Researchers who are in field of Environment

Who want to make a career in Environment Field
Course Content
The course would focus on the science behind air quality monitoring &control with significant emphasis on hands on use, maintenance & calibration of monitoring instruments. The course aims to equip the participants with skill sets to carry out any monitoring exercise with competence & confidence.
This program would broadly cover:
Faculty
Besides personnel from Teri SAS and ECRD, a few faculty shall be included from Pollution Control Boards, Consultants and Academic & Research Institutes.
Why This Training
Enactment of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act in 1981, mandated monitoring of air quality and control of air pollution from various sources including vehicular, mining as well as industrial. There are several pockets in the country where air pollution problems have already become critical. Urgent and adequate measures are needed to ensure that future urban and economic development does not result in causing serious air quality deterioration. The government of India has felt this importance and notified stringent ambient air quality standards and included a few more parameters like Ozone, Benzene, Benzo(a)pyrene, As and Ni on 18th Nov 2009. The methods of measurement for these parameters have also been notified. However, a significant constraint in effectively monitoring industrial emissions and ambient air quality has been the paucity of trained manpower with adequate skills, confidence and experience. The personnel deployed on these tasks need to be fully conversant with appropriate monitoring devices, their operation, maintenance & calibration. The difficulties faced by them need to be resolved. The proposed training program would attempt to tackle such shortcomings.
What you’ll Learn
Hands on training on air quality monitoring
Participants will have an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge base and clear understanding of theoretical concepts of air quality monitoring of SPM, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOx and many more gaseous pollutants in ambient air. They will be involved in hands on field exercises in detail so that they have confidence in air quality monitoring after attending this training program.
IMPORTANCE OF AIR QUALITY & ITS IMPACTS ON HUMAN HEALTH, PLANTS / VEGETATION & AGRICULTURE
Air pollution has clear negative impacts on health, ecosystem and vegetation. In the module we will discuss how to plan experiment to measure ill effects of air pollutants on vegetation and health. We will discuss about techniques of measuring risk of different levels of exposure of pollutants.
FILTER FOR AIR POLLUTION MONITORING
A number of different filter papers/membranes are required for monitoring and chemical characterization of particulate pollution. The module will provide understanding on type of available filter, regulations and how to standardize filters for specific type of analysis.
DATA ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION (OVERVIEW) AND HAND ON EXERCISE
Data analysis is an integral part of an air quality monitoring program, data mining provides us with information on the characteristics of emissions. Data obtained need to be made interpretable. The module will provide a basic understanding of different types of data, their categorization and what are available tools to use for basic statistics. The module is followed by a hand on exercise using dummy datasets which will allow participants to feel the power of statistics in getting inference from any kind of monitoring exercise.
AIR POLLUTION SOURCES AND TRANSPORT & DISPERSION:
Air pollution is known as major environmental hazard to human health and is estimated to cause millions of premature deaths globally. This module will provide a deeper understanding of the different types of air pollutants, their sources and how air pollutants get transported at different planetary scales.
IMPORTANCE OF METEOROLOGY IN AIR QUALITY MONITORING
Meteorological parameters have significant consequences on the air quality of the surroundings. This module will impart learning about how meteorology plays an important role in the abatement and control of air pollution.
NOISE POLLUTION, ITS MONITORING & CONTROL
The module will provide an understanding of sources of noise pollution, environmental and industrial noise; effects of noise pollution, measures for prevention and control of noise and noise control legislation.
